Shawn E. Martin is the Vice President of Technical Services for the ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), where he manages certification programs for renewable energy products. Martin has been responsible for the Small Wind Certification Council (ICC-SWCC) wind turbine certification program since SWCC joined ICC-ES in 2017. He also manages the Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (ICC-SRCC) program certifying solar heating and cooling products since SRCC joined ICC in 2014. Martin has extensive experience managing consensus standard development, product design, building technology research and testing programs, particularly in the fields of fluid dynamics and building technologies.
Martin has worked at the International Code Council (ICC) since 2009 in several capacities related to sustainable construction and water efficiency in building codes and standards. As the ICC Director of PMG Activities with the International Code Council, Martin lead its plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas (PMG) program. Martin has served on the technical committees participated in for many consensus standards projects, serving as both as a committee member and staff secretariat. He served as the secretariat for solar thermal collectors (ICC 901), solar water heaters (ICC 900), solar pool heaters (ICC 902), landscape sprinklers (ICC 802) and rainwater harvesting systems (ICC 805). He has also represented ICC as a member of many standard and consensus committees with organizations such AHRI, ASME, ASPE, CSA, NFPA, NSF and USGBC.
In addition to consensus standards, Martin has extensive experience in the development and implementation of construction codes in the U.S. and internationally for safety and sustainability. He has served as a technical committee member for each of the model plumbing codes in use in the U.S and has worked to develop and implement training and resources for these codes. He was also part of the team that developed the Council’s ICC’s International Solar Energy Provisions (ISEP) and Water Efficiency Provisions (WEP) code resource compendiums.
Prior to his appointment at the Code Council, Martin served as the Technical Director for the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute (PMI), a trade association of plumbing product manufacturers. Before PMI, Martin managed the applied field research program of at the NAHB Research Center as the director of the technology division. where There he conducted research into advanced and green building technologies working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s PATH program and the Department of Energy’s Building America program. He also worked at the Hewlett Packard Corporation developing next generation inkjet printing technologies. Martin holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, where his research and thesis focused on micro-scale fluid flow and ultrasonic devices. He holds several patents for fluid-flow products.
