The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released the Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Interconnection Roadmap to address challenges in connecting clean energy sources to the grid. Led by DOE’s Solar and Wind Energy Technologies Offices through the Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X), the roadmap outlines strategies to streamline interconnection processes as the demand for distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as rooftop solar, community solar, wind, EV charging, and battery storage—continues to grow.
The roadmap is built around four key goals aimed at making interconnection simpler, faster, and fairer while maintaining grid reliability and security. Developed with extensive stakeholder input, it categorizes solutions by time scale and deployment level to help states and regions implement effective strategies.
This document complements the DOE’s Transmission Interconnection Roadmap (April 2024) and will be introduced in a webinar on January 30, 2025, as part of a series discussing its goals and solutions.
