New PNNL Tool Supports Economic Analysis for Distributed Wind

Are you interested in analyzing costs and benefits of installing an onsite wind turbine or a project designated for local use? Check out the new updates to the recently launched tool, WINDVALT, developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

WINDVALT allows you to select a location and turbine type to calculate key financial parameters, such as the net present value of the project, annual cash flows, and a breakdown of costs and benefits. WINDVALT makes it easy to consider both behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter projects and will provide you with exportable results. Learn more here.

PNNL’s New DW Photo Gallery

PNNL is excited to share its new Distributed Wind Photo Gallery, a unified location to find photos featuring distributed wind projects across the U.S. The new Gallery features search capabilities that allow a user to quickly find DW photos that showcase projects with specific turbine models, customer types (agricultural, residential, etc.), locations, and years online.

These photos can be used, with credit to the original photographers, to aid DW industry and researchers in developing education and outreach materials like case studies, guidebooks, presentations, and event announcements. New Consortium Relaunches EWT

Following an asset purchase on 4/17/25, a 3-party consortium launched EWT Systems B.V., enabling the wind turbine platform to continue serving communities, commercial customers, and governments worldwide. The new partners are:

• Northern Power Systems, DWEA member and manufacturer of wind turbines with rated 60 to 100 kW, with an installed base of more than 900 units across five continents;
• Northern Energy Capital, with vast experience designing, developing, and providing financial solutions for renewable energy projects engineered for remote communities and mining operations across Northern Canada and Alaska; and
• GreenCat Renewables, an expert team of engineers, environmental consultants, technicians, project and site managers, and specialists involved in 420+ wind, solar, and hydro projects.

“EWTS fills an important niche and continues to receive strong demand,” noted EWT Americas Commercial Director Brett Pingree. “With our best in class solution, we’re at the heart of the global transition to sustainable forms of power generation, helping businesses and communities become distributed energy champions.”

Building on 20 years of product innovation and >600 units installed across Europe, the Americas and Asia, EWT Systems’ 250 kW to 1 MW platform serves both on- and off-grid project owners and developers, behind-the-meter commercial and institutional customers as well as remote and isolated micro-grid operators. EWTS’ turbines are engineered to operate in extreme climates such as Antarctica. EWT Systems acquired EWT Americas, Inc. and two EWT manufacturing locations keeping the core team, expertise, and mission remain intact. Kodair Turbine Models Certified to ACP 101-1 Standard

DWEA member ICC Small Wind Certification Council (ICC-SWCC), a program of ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), this spring awarded two new certifications to DWEA member Kodair Wind Designs Ltd. for its KW20 and KW30 wind turbines. These are the first wind turbines to be certified to the ACP 101-1, 2021 Small Wind Turbine Standard, which succeeded the long-used AWEA 9.1-2009 standard.

Kodair Wind, based in Ireland, has been developing innovative and economical wind turbines since 2006. The company’s current three-blade models – the KW20 and KW30 – represent its latest advancements in distributed wind technology. Both turbines underwent testing at Kodair’s facility in County Galway, Ireland, from late 2023 through early 2024. Testing was managed and supervised by Joseph Spossey of DWEA member RE Innovations.

REpowering Schools Brings Students into DW, Offers $10k Seed Funding

Dedicated to strengthening the clean energy sector by cultivating a skilled, diverse, and future-ready workforce, REpowering Schools (REpS) is working to further its mission, rooted in fostering innovative public-private partnerships bringing together federal and state agencies, universities, educators, and industry leaders. These collaborations aim to inspire and educate K-12 through college students, creating a pipeline of talent committed to a sustainable future.

REpS supports academic research through seed funding for wind energy projects. Colleges, universities, and community colleges are eligible to receive up to $10,000 to help fund innovative student-led initiatives that expand knowledge and innovation in the field. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, REpS offers many avenues for industry partners and educational institutions to get involved. From national conference experiences to student symposia, the REpS team helps prepare the next generation of renewable energy professionals. REpS is excited to return to RE+ 2025 this September in Las Vegas, NV, with a group of students. Each week, REpS hosts Student Network Calls on Wednesdays – an informal and inspiring way for students to connect with peers and professionals across the clean energy landscape. These sessions offer valuable networking, career insights, and exposure to leading companies in the sector. REpS is committed to bridging the gap between clean energy job opportunities and emerging talent, and encourages employers to share job openings with its network and support students and recent graduates seeking career pathways in renewable energy. NYSERDA Grid Enhancing Technologies Innovative Solutions Opportunity

DWEA members and affiliates interested in developing or demonstrating hybrid “grid enhancing” technologies in New York should check out this upcoming funding opportunity sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). While DWEA is not planning to apply directly, our staff are happy to collaborate and support applications. NYSERDA is accepting submissions until July 15, 2025.
